Board Game Cornerstones

Camel Up
Best Player Count: 4-6
Complexity: Low
Length: 30 minutes
Type: Bidding/Racing
My Rating: 6/10
You are all watching a camel race betting on which camels you think will perform well.
Get it If:
  • You want an accessible game where anyone can win, but the person who crunches the probability and min/maxes turn order the best will have a better chance.
  • You want a game where ridiculous things can happen.
Don't Get it If:
  • You want a game where you have a decent amount of agency.
  • You want the feeling of ownership of having your exclusive racing piece.
Catan
Best Player Count: 4
Complexity: Low
Length: 60-120 minutes
Type: City Building
My Rating: 4/10
You must lead your people to settle the island of Catan the best, all while trading with yet hindering the growth of your neighbors.
Get it If:
  • You want one of the few accessible games with a map aspect, along with several other mechanisms whose combination is almost unique to Catan.
  • You want a game that seamlessly blends together luck, min/max skill, and trading/negotiation skill all together.
Don't Get it If:
  • You don't want a gateway game that can become bogged down and drag to be as long as a rather complex game.
  • You don't like trading and negotiating messing with your economic min/maxing.
Citadels
Best Player Count: 5
Complexity: Low
Length: 30-90 minutes
Type: Hidden Role Selection
My Rating: 7/10
Nominally about building buildings, but more a game of outguessing your opponents. Did you choose the character role that will give you the most useful power? Or was that too obvious and you chose the second-best power instead? Or the one that counters Player C the best?
Get it If:
  • You want a game with a lot of double think, but not with the arbitrary nature it sometimes manifests in many party games.
  • You want that double think married to different powers that feed into a resource management card game, so that there is actually nuance to leverage from this double think.
Don't Get it If:
  • You don't want a game that can drag way too long for what it is, especially at the higher player counts.
  • You don't like the idea of someone potentially getting eliminated for multiple turns.
Codenames
Best Player Count: 6, 8
Complexity: Low
Length: 15 minutes
Type: Clue Giving/Social Deduction
My Rating: 6/10
Players are divided into teams. Each team has a spy master, who attempts to give clues to make the rest of their team correctly pick words laid out in a grid on the table.
Get it If:
  • You want a very accessible party game that plays differently with every person.
Don't Get it If:
  • You wanted a party game where people were actually talking to each other regularly, rather than staring silently at a bunch of cards.

Rolling Committee Applications

Board Games at Berkeley is looking for passionate gamers to help run the club. And so, we are excited to announce the opening of committee applications to all interested (UC Berkeley student) individuals! The application process is fairly simple, and involves only a 200-400 word short essay for each committee you'd like to apply for. Then qualified applicants will be scheduled for a short casual interview! Committee members are expected to contribute a mere 3 to 7 hours a week in their role, so apply now!

We have four committees accepting applications:

Weekday Game Night Committee
Weekend Game Night Committee
Media Committee
Convention Committee

Information on these committees can be found in the application. Apply now at: https://tinyurl.com/BGBApp2018 *

*You must use your UC Berkeley email to access the form.
