Pacific Women Lead team starts work at the Pacific Community (SPC)

Pacific Women Lead has been welcomed by the Pacific Community (SPC) to its Human Rights and Social Development (HRSD) Division.

One of the largest global commitments to gender equality, Pacific Women Lead aims to promote women's leadership, realise women's rights, and increase the effectiveness of regional gender equality efforts. For the five-year programme, Australia has committed AUD 170 million through partnerships with SPC HRSD, women's funds and other development partners.

Several members of the SPC HRSD Pacific Women Lead (PWL) team have been recruited from the Support Unit of Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development (Pacific Women), which was the region's former gender equality programme supported by Australia for nearly 10 years. The new programme's onboarding of specialist staff from Pacific Women to PWL has ensured continuity of funding and technical support to partners including many of the 15 Pacific crisis centre partners supported by Australia through the former programme.

As Pacific Women Lead began in 2021, the regional Pacific Women programme closed with country-specific support in Papua New Guinea continuing in 2022. Pacific Women connected more than 190 partners and over 180 initiatives across 14 countries.

Sharing knowledge to further build on gender equality programmes in the Pacific

The new Pacific Women Lead programme draws on the successes and lessons learned from previous gender equality initiatives in the Pacific. In particular, the extensive portfolio of knowledge generated over 10 years through Pacific Women's support to more than 190 partners and over 180 initiatives across 14 countries.

Corresponding with the start of Pacific Women Lead, a suite of knowledge products was developed in 2021 by the Pacific Women Support Unit to capture and share more than a decade of partners' experience to help guide the new programme.

Lessons learned, good practice and gender transformative approaches are shared through the suite of knowledge products and activities, which include a Pacific Practice Note Series, stories of change, impact assessments, videos, slideshows, partner convenings and webinars.

This knowledge capture and sharing aims to guide future programmes and policies that can build on, and be influenced by, the lessons from previous gender initiatives in the Pacific. This includes guiding the implementation of Pacific Women Lead.

The knowledge items continue to be disseminated widely by the Pacific Women Lead team at SPC HRSD, and are also readily accessible online through a commitment to knowledge management and using the Pacific Data Hub.

The knowledge product series complement the final report and highlights booklet for the Pacific Women programme.

Pacific Women Legacy Video

This video reflects on the long-term, nearly 10-year journey of the partners supported by Pacific Women, who together paved the way for new initiatives and approaches to progress gender equality in the Pacific.

Interviewees share some achievements, reflect on progress since 2012 and share their visions for the future. Read more.

Pacific Practice Note Series

The Pacific Practice Note Series focuses on gender equality and empowerment. The series captures and shares the lessons learned, successes and experiences from many partners supported by Australia through Pacific Women.

This knowledge will help to guide other gender equality initiatives and programming, such as Pacific Women Lead that commenced in 2021.

There are three Pacific Practice Notes in the initial series.

Practice Note: From Participation to Power: Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE)

This Practice Note addresses the shortfall of many WEE initiatives to meaningfully address women's empowerment.

It provides practical recommendations for implementing empowering approaches within economic development programmes.

The key learnings gathered and assessed in the Practice Note aim to help advance the conversation from 'economic participation' to meaningful 'economic empowerment' for initiatives in the Pacific.

Practice Note: Opening Doors for Lasting Change - Gender Transformation in Practice

This Practice Note shares programming approaches that have led to gender transformative change in Papua New Guinea, with the intention to influence policy, action and practice to include principles of gender transformation.

The Gender Transformation in Practice (GETA) Practice Note joins the GETA report launched in August 2021 – Pacific Women Gender Transformative Change is possible in Papua New Guinea – to complete a 'package of resources' to drive change towards improved gender equality. Read the report.

Practice Note: Small Grants, Big Results

This Practice Note highlights the catalytic role of community-based and women's organisations to women's empowerment and social change, this Practice Note provides an evidence-base of successful small-granting approaches and strong partnerships, to influence funders to expand small granting programmes.

The evidence from the Women's Fund Fiji and several Pacific Women partners indicates small grants can lead to significant results.

We Don't Whisper Anymore – Ending Violence against women in the North Pacific

The story of the women behind the opening of the first crisis centres in three North Pacific countries is shared in two new online resources developed by Pacific Women, in collaboration with its crisis centre partners.

The 'We Don't Whisper Anymore' photo book shares the Herstories of extraordinary women from Kiribati, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Republic of Marshall Islands (RMI) and across the Pacific, operating crisis centres and services to end violence against women and children. It is available in e-flipbook format and online PDF with printed versions to be available soon.

In addition to the online Gender-Based Violence (GBV) photo book of Herstories is a new GBV 'story of change' booklet.

The booklet details the historic journey of Pacific women and women's movements who − over more than 40 years − have struggled, lobbied, stood in solidarity, supported each other and survivors of violence against women, and triumphed.

This triumph includes opening crisis centres in Kiribati, FSM and RMI. Read more.

Telephone Counselling for Gender Based Violence (GBV) Survivors: A Pacific Toolkit

A toolkit will help train gender-based violence (GBV) counsellors to better provide support over the phone to survivors of violence against women and children.

The 'Telephone Counselling for Gender Based Violence (GBV) Survivors: A Pacific Toolkit' contains a comprehensive training manual with step-by-step instructions, activities and session plans.

The Pacific Toolkit also includes multimedia tools such as audio role plays and PowerPoint presentations, which are ready-to-use by trainers during capacity development sessions with GBV counsellors.

The toolkit was previewed at a Pacific Women Papua New Guinea (PNG) Learning Session that featured service providers who provide phone counselling sessions - they shared lessons learned from GBV phone counselling that has been playing a vital role in the current COVID-19 response.

A summary of the toolkit is online including details for GBV counselling trainers wanting support to deliver the package. Read More
