Language, diversity and cultural identity in Papua New Guinea
Online discussion event - watch now

The United Nations' declaration of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032) puts the spotlight on a critical issue: the world's indigenous languages are under threat. The declaration is hoped to spur preservation and promotion of languages and curb the tide of extinction.

As the world's most linguistically diverse nation, Papua New Guinea is especially alive to the challenges that are facing the world's lesser-spoken languages. While PNG is thought to be home to as many as 850 distinct languages, many are in danger of being lost as communities become more mobile and interconnected. But while there are concerns, there are also surprises. In 2020, a newly-recognised language was added to PNG's list.

For this special Aus-PNG Network event, the Lowy Institute's Jessica Collins is joined by four experts to discuss language, diversity and cultural identity in Papua New Guinea.
