| Dear Community Member, This email is a little different from most of our newsletters. We're writing to update you on an important issue that affects our entire community. The Telluride Jewish Community has raised formal concerns with KOTO Radio about its continued broadcast of Democracy Now! — a program that presents a consistently one-sided and biased portrayal of Israel, while failing to address the real threats facing Jewish communities today. Our Concerns: Democracy Now! has repeatedly: - Framed Israel as a settler-colonial, apartheid state with no counterbalance from Israel perspectives.
- Refused to unequivocally condemn Hamas's mass murder and hostage-taking on October 7, often portraying it as a response to Israeli policy.
- Minimized or ignored the suffering of Israeli victims and hostages, while focusing disproportionately on Palestinian casualties.
- Platformed activists who equate Zionism with racism, reinforcing dangerous narratives that fuel antisemitic sentiment.
As a community-funded, non-commercial station, KOTO must uphold standards of fairness and diversity in its content. KOTO's Response: While KOTO's Citizens Advisory Board (CAB) has agreed to monitor Democracy Now! until their June meeting and explore counter-programming options with alternate viewpoints, the program continues to air unchanged, and our core concerns remain unresolved. What You Can Do: KOTO has invited community input, and now is the time for your voice to be heard. We encourage you to: - Call KOTO and ask them to provide a more balanced approach.
- Write to KOTO leadership expressing your concerns about Democracy Now!.
- Participate in KOTO's public comment opportunities to share your perspective.
- Provide input for their upcoming listener survey, which will include questions about Democracy Now!.
