For the first time in history, a sitting U.S. president has called for a nationwide observance of Shabbat. As part of the White House’s Jewish American Heritage Month recognition and the country’s 250th anniversary celebration, President Trump designated the period from sundown Friday, May 15, through Saturday, May 16, 2026, as “Shabbat 250,” a national Shabbat observance. Shabbat shalom!

The library’s current Nakba Day display has generated significant concern within parts of the Jewish community, many of whom feel the exhibit presents an overwhelmingly anti-Israel narrative. Of roughly 27 titles in the display, only four offer a more Israeli or Zionist perspective. Community members have requested meetings with library leadership and a more balanced presentation. Additionally, a May 11 letter signed by 44 residents was sent to the library board and director. A response is expected next week. Please email for a copy of the letter or for more details about how you can be part of the conversation.
